| Besides being important for showmanship events, working in hand is very beneficial to horses of all ages and disciplines. It teaches the young horse to be responsive to his handler and gives him skills necessary for work under saddle. In-hand work sharpens the older horse and provides alternative lessons when circumstances do not allow for ridden lessons. |

Ride Across Patagonia |
| Estancia to Estancia in Patagonia sounds remote and exotic. And it is. Fast riding on wide open grasslands without a road or house in sight just cattle, deer, guanocos and the occasional rhea on the skyline. So far after 30 rides, this is maybe my favourite one. Patagonia is a vast area partly in Argentina and partly in Chile bounded by the Andes on the west and a desert on the east. Settlement started in the early 1900’s with Europeans buying vast estancias of thousands of acres and there is still a self sufficient frontier like feel. |

| If you remember from the previous article, we teach the horse to do certain in-hand maneuvers on the ground so that he already will be familiar with them when asked to do them under saddle. This lesson will help you teach your horse yielding to the right. |
